Findon Place
From our visit to Chalk Farm Flowers, hungry now for tea and scones (although Dan and Molly had also kindly offered these), we returned to Findon Place, where Caroline Hill had set out a long table in the ballroom. All white linen, flowers, tea, scones and every sort of cake; this was delicious indulgence and we loved it!
Caroline’s garden, set in a hollow of the Downs, is heaven. The downland grass that surrounds the estate had turned gold after the hot summer and created the loveliest of backdrops to the abundance of flowers and topiaried bushes. Caroline had told us which route to take through the garden and this we followed, repeating our steps time after time and delighting in the very English summer beauty of it all.
The narrow elegance of a Verbena bonariensis tied loosely against the poolside shelter seemed as elegant as the groaning beauty of the late summer hydrangeas and the sweet smelling daphne either side of an enchanting seat. The orchard and cutting garden were a delight, the white cane chairs and tables beneath the trees timeless in their allure and everything just right!
Next year Caroline is turning the eighteenth century stable block into a shop and event centre. There will be a café and temptations galore. And all on our doorstep!
